The need to do something with leisure, entertainment, or even just for fun and/or enjoyment is an inherent component of human psychology and nature. Reciprocal activities have been shown to enhance memory, hand-eye coordination, social skills, and mood. They provide a venue to learn new things or just to have fun. Many recreational activities are also good for you! If we want our children to thrive, they must learn how to play, walk and breathe.

There are many different forms of recreation. Sports recreation, motorsports (e.g. running, hiking, fishing, boating), outdoor games (e.g. basketball, bowling, table tennis) and physical fitness activities (e.g. running, swimming, biking). Other forms of recreation are also beneficial to our well-being, for example, playing in a structured environment (a skill sport) can help alleviate some of the problems associated with anxiety, depression, and stress.
Some forms of recreation can become addictive, however, such as gambling, recreational drugs, alcoholism, and other vices. It is important to distinguish between recreational time, which we do not need, and the time we invest in unhealthy activities. This could exacerbate any underlying mental, emotional or physical health issues. A good way to manage recreational time is by setting up regular family games night after night so that the family can relax together and enjoy each other’s company without the intrusion of television, radio, or computer. However, it is also important that we allow our children to have some free time on their own, without our interference.
